The
Junior School
caters for students 4-12 years.
Students mostly follow the main primary curriculum taking a holistic approach to ensure that the needs of each student are met and that learning
is both enjoyable and worthwhile and that students realise their full potential as unique individuals.
The Primary Curriculum is presented in seven curriculum areas comprising 12 subjects.
•
Communication and Language
•
Mathematics
•
Physical Education
•
Arts Education (Visual arts, Music, Drama)
•
Social, Personal and Health education
•
Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (History, Geography, Science)
•
Religious instruction is provided to students preparing for First Holy Communion and Confirmation as appropriate
The English Curriculum plays a vital role in our school. It encompasses the three integrated areas of oral language, reading and writing.
The individual needs of our children must be taken into account when delivering the English curriculum.
We feel that all children should be exposed to and reach their full potential in each of the three areas.
By enhancing their English skills and understanding they will:
•
Become receptive to oral language.
•
Develop competence and confidence in using the English language.
•
Gain meaningful access to other areas of the curriculum.
•
Enjoy books and other printed material (for information and pleasure).
•
Have the opportunity to express his/her self through word/print.
•
Develop his/her skills of attending to task, responding and interacting.
•
Become more confident and improve his/her self esteem.
The
Maths
Curriculum
encompasses
a
huge
body
of
knowledge,
concepts,
skills
and
procedures.
This
gives
the
students
the
opportunity
for
individual
and
group
activities,
which
challenges
them
in
a
setting
which
allows
for
enjoyment
and
achievement.
We
use
maths
in
everyday
life
and we see the content of the curriculum as an important tool for our children to have in order to live a full life as an adult.
The Physical Education Programme
also contributes to the whole development of the child. It enables the children to develop physical skills and
co-ordination. It contributes to their Social and Personal development, helping to foster the concept of fair-play and a balanced perspective of
both acceptance of success and failure. It will also develop the children’s co-operative skills, their cognitive and emotional development.
Our P.E. Curriculum seeks to satisfy the physical needs of the children through consistent and comprehensive experience of movement and play
that will challenge each child to realise their Individual physical potential. We aim to provide a wide range of physical experiences appropriate
to the developmental needs of each individual child.
The Visual Arts Curriculum
will help our children to see and understand the world around them and to express their feelings, ideas and
experiences in Visual form. It will give them an opportunity to experience and explore drawing, painting, inventing and construction using a
variety
of
materials.
The
Curriculum
will
expose
children
to
works
of
art
and
introduce
them
to
many
art
forms
and
artists.
We
put
great
emphasis on displaying children’s finished work. This gives children a great sense of pride and therefore enhances self-esteem.
The
Drama
Curriculum
provides
a
unique
contribution
to
the
development
of
our
children-facilitating
their
imaginative,
intellectual,
emotional
and
spiritual
development.
Through
it
we
aim
to
foster
the
child’s
creativity,
not
only
allowing
the
child
to
experience,
understand
and
practice
life
skills
but
also
to
promote
empathy
with
the
ideas,
attitudes
and
feelings
of
others.
Drama
provides
a
safe
context
for
the
children
in
which
to
explore
themes
and
issues,
to
make
decisions
and
to
take
responsibility
for
their
decisions.
Drama
classes
will
draw
on
the
knowledge,
interests
and enthusiasms of the children and will be a fun experience for all concerned.
Music Education
is an indispensable part of our curriculum because we believe it contributes to the whole development of the child.
It develops speech and language skills, listening skills, memory skills and social skills. It fosters communication, imagination and creativity.
It contributes to the whole development of the child. We aim to encourage the children to participate in a wide range of enjoyable musical
experiences and so foster a life long appreciation of music and a valuable leisure time activity.
Our
Social Personal and Health Education Curriculum
is mediated to the children in three ways.
1
.
Through our positive school climate and atmosphere
2
.
Through integration with other subject area
3
.
Through specifically allocated curricular time
S.P.H.E.
helps
the
children
to
understand
themselves,
to
develop
healthy
relationships
and
to
establish
and
maintain
healthy
patterns
of
behaviour.
We
aim
to
develop
a
foundation
of
skills,
knowledge
and
attitudes
that
will
inform
their
decision
making
in
the
social,
personal
and
health
diversions
of
their
lives
during
the
school
years
and
in
the
future.
Central
to
our
programme
is
to
develop
a
sense
of
safety
and
an
ability
to protect themselves from danger and abuse.
Social,
Environmental
and
Scientific
Education
contributes
to
the
development
of
the
child’s
awareness,
appreciation
and
understanding
of
the
natural,
human,
cultural,
social
and
historical
diversions
of
life.
This
will
help
the
children
to
acquire
open,
critical
and
responsible
attitudes
and
to
live
as
an
informed
and
caring
member
of
the
local
and
wider
communities.
The
History,
Geography
and
Science
subjects
will
enable
the
pupils
to
develop
skills
such
as;
collecting
and
examining
data,
exploration,
observation,
questioning,
experimenting,
recording
and
predicting
while
at
the same time acquiring knowledge and concepts.
