Scoil na nÓg is a pre-school specifically set up to respond to the needs of young children with Autism. It caters for children aged 3-5 years.
In Scoil na nÓg an eclectic approach is in place to encompass the individuality and uniqueness of each child and to nurture his/her interests and abilities and support his/her needs. In our opinion a holistic early intervention is essential for the development of young children with ASD, especially in the area of communication and social development. Methodologies are based on the TEACCH approach but children’s individual needs are valued and, where possible, met through elements of different interventions including PECS, ABA, Sensory Integration Therapy and Social Skills Training. Furthermore, activities as part of the eclectic approach will include social integration opportunities, music, play, art and crafts, computers, drama and more, depending on interest and ability.
Intervention in all of the above areas will aim to provide holistic and multi-sensory learning experiences encouraging independence, communication and self-esteem. The classrooms provide a clearly structured environment with visual support systems in place, enhancing independence and orientation. Facilities in Scoil na nÓg comprise of a large main classroom, dining-area, play-room, sensory/relaxation room, art- & water-play room and outdoor play-area.
Activities and equipment are play-based and designed to give opportunities to encourage communication and interaction, support gross and fine-motor skills, provide multi-sensory experiences and, very importantly, promote education, fun and enjoyment!!
